January 2012

January, 2012

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2012 garden season. My goal for this newsletter is to give the most up-to-date and timely information for this gardening season. With that said let me get started. December brought us some much needed rain and mild temperatures. The garden soils should be ready for you to work in your compost and other organic products. Russell Feed & Supply carries a full line of Nature’s Guide organic products to help improve the gardens and lawns. View Nature’s Guide website for product information http://natures-guide.com.

Once the soil is ready to plant stop by our stores ad pick up your onion plants, potato seeds, and fresh bulk and package seeds. January is the time to start working on your gardens.

Here is a quick guide:
  • Plant Onions Jan. 5th, English Peas Jan.19th and Spinach Jan. 19th
  • Spray fruit and pecan trees with a Horticulture oil / All Season Spray
  • Prune fruit trees
  • Prune off damaged and weak tree limbs
  • Plant fruit trees, pecan trees, grape and berry plants
  • Fescue and Rye grass seed can still be planted

The average rainfall for January is 1.90” so have rain barrels set up and ready to catch every drop, the plants my need the water later in the year.
