February 2012

It’s been a mild winter around North Texas. Makes me want to plant something!

Here are some items you can plant now: onions, seed potatoes, turnips, collards, spinach, broccoli, beets, asparagus, cabbage, kale and more. These vegetables can be planted by seed or from plants. There is nothing better than home grown vegetables.

We have a great supply of organic products to add to your gardens:
  • Cow Manure
  • Cotton Burr Compost
  • Organic Compost
  • Top Soils and more

If space is an issue, try a raised garden. Russell’s has a greatRaised Bed Mix to use in any raised bed. Raised bed garden kits are available in the stores. Raised Bed Mix can also be used for potted plants and flowerbeds.

Remember, the average last freeze date for this area is around March 13th. Take care to cover your items if and when our weather drops.

With all the warm weather, now is the best time to apply a pre-emergence weed control. You can use the organic Corn Gluten meal or a chemical product such as Dimension to help control weeds in your lawns. The sooner you apply, the better weed control you will have. Remember to apply again in late April or early May for summer weed control, and again in September.

Between the January rain and expected rainfall for February, our area should have a good pecan and fruit tree crop this year. Remember to spray fruit and pecan trees regularly to help prevent insect and disease problems. You can find additional information on spraying for fruit and nut trees at the Texas Cooperative Extension Service website. They just posted a new guide.

Looking for gardening projects? Consider these:
  • Prune rose bushes back halfway
  • Prune fruit trees and grapevines
  • Thin out small branches on crape myrtles. Do not top crape myrtles

Don’t forget the Fort Worth Cactus Succulent Society meeting on February 21, at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm.

Mike
