Your tomato plants are in the ground, the weather is warming up and the plants are growing! What’s next? Support for tomatoes should be at the top of the list. Take the time to stake your tomato plants. Staking your plants helps keep them clean and avoids diseases, and makes it easier to monitor them for any problems and harvest when the time comes.
There are several options available for your plants including stakes, circular cages or the use of a trellis. If using a stake use stakes between 3 to 8 feet tall. Ensure that you have a least a foot in the ground beside the tomato plant and tie the plant to the stage as it grows. Set stakes between 2 to 4 feet apart, this will depend on the variety of tomato that you use.
Circular cages provide more support for tomatoes. Set cages about 4 feet apart, again depending on the variety of tomato. Cages can be re-used.
