November 2011

We are thankful for the cooler temperatures and rain. The cooler temperatures mean winter is around the corner, now is the time to begin your preparations.

For those of you that have your favorite tropical plants outside, now is the time to start preparing tropical plants for the lower light conditions inside the home. Slowly move them into a lower light area of your yard or patio area. If plants are in full sun or bright light now, this will help with leaf drop when moved inside.

Another good idea is to dust the top of the soil with sevin dust or other insect dust. When the plant is watered it will wash the dust through the soil and kill any insects. This will help keep the insects out of your home. I would do this as soon as possible our average freeze date is November 22nd . Speaking for freezes, don’t forget your vegetables and plants. Use frost cloth / floating row cover, it will help keep your vegetables or tender plants hang around awhile longer.

The leaves are starting to fall from the trees, this is a great time to start your compost piles. Using your own compost in your flowerbeds and gardens next spring will make happy and healthy plants.

With freezing temperatures just around the corner be sure to disconnect water hoses from the outside faucets and drain excess water from water hoses. Use a faucet cover to protect outside faucets.

Let’s not forget our animal friend’s outside. A large supply of wild bird and squirrel food is now in-stock at all store locations. Straw is available for animal bedding and comfort.

Looking for a great holiday gift idea for the gardener in your life? The Farmer’s Almanac for 2012 in the feed stores now. You can keep up with forecast on the weather, planting dates, moon phases, sunrise sunsets and much more.

Don’t forget to send us your fall photos and we will post them on our website.

Have a Great and Safe November
