Mike’s Garden Newsletter October, 2012

Well Fall has arrived, we have about 50 days before DFW area first frost. The average first frost for the area is November 20th. There is still plenty of time to start a fall vegetable garden. Vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard, parsley, radish, spinach, turnips, and more can be planted with great success. If space is a problem try a raised garden.

Most raised gardens sit on top of the ground, so no tilling of the soil is needed. Russell Feed stores carry raised garden kits for sale. All you need to do is add the soil and plant. If you’re a Do-It-Yourself type person check out Tarrant County Master Gardeners website on how to build raised gardens. The Master Gardeners have some great ideals on raised gardens.

If you like a green yard this winter try over seeding with winter annual rye. Apply annual rye seed to your lawn or yard now now and it will start sprouting in 7 to 14 days. There is still time to fertilize. Try Nature’s guide Fall Fertilizer or any of Russell’s slow release fertilizers.

Applying a now will help stop and prevent winter weeds and grasses. Use organic corn gluten pre-emergence meal or any product with Dimension. The sooner the product is applied the better it will work.

Fall Harvest displays are going up in the yards now. Russell Feed stores have straw bales to use in your displays. Build a great looking display and want to show it off? Just send us a picture of your fall displays and we’ll put it on our website and use it in our November newsletter.
